Miami Marine Stadium

The Miami Marine Stadium is located in Virginia Key in Miami, Florida. Engineering work was done by Jack Meyer of Dignum Engineers and it was designed by Cuban-born Architect Hilario Candela. It completed in 1963 and seated 6,566 people. The entire stadium is concrete with cantilevered folded-plate roof that is supported by eight big slanted columns anchored in the ground.
The Stadium hosted Water Sporting Events such as boat races and the Hydroplane national Championship in 1987. The Stadium also hosted concerts on a floating stage that was across from the stadium, Easter Sunrise Services, political rallies, television shows and even movies.
The Miami Marine Stadium closed in 1992 because of damage from Hurricane Andrew. Till this day, the Stadium has been sitting vacant and has been used as breeding ground for graffiti artists.

In February 20 2008, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium was formed to help the restoration of the stadium. It has been recognized as an architectural masterpiece by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2009 and World Monuments Fund in 2010.
